H1N1 cases rise to 701 in Singapore
Posted: 30 June 2009 1951 hrs
SINGAPORE: Singapore has confirmed 72 new H1N1 flu cases, bringing the tally to 701 so far.
The Health Ministry says most cases are mild and to date, 281 patients have fully recovered and the rest are recuperating.
Singaporeans should carry on with their usual activities whilst observing good personal hygiene at all times. If unwell, they should see a doctor, stay away from work, school or crowded places, and rest at home.
Investigations are on-going for the 72 new cases. Of the 64 cases investigated on Tuesday, there were 42 local cases and 22 imported ones.
Of the latest cases investigated, the largest number of new cases were linked to the Republic Polytechnic, bringing the total number of cases there to 77.
Over 1,900 second- and third-year students have signed an online petition calling on the polytechnic to suspend classes, not just for first-year students but for them as well.
The polytechnic said it understands the students' concerns and has also received feedback from them through internal channels although it has not received any petition formally.
The school added that it is monitoring the situation closely and is prepared to take additional measures if required to safeguard the well-being of staff and students.
Another three new H1N1 cases were found linked to an orientation camp at the National University of Singapore, bringing the number of cases in that cluster to seven.
Clementi Camp had two new cases raising the total there to 55, while there was one new case each from the Raffles Institution Boarding School, Butter Factory, Maju Camp and Pulau Tekong Camp clusters.
Wah liew....
701 liao... Soon it will hit 1000!
Stay healthy, people!

Charmaine at Day 3 after operation
SINGAPORE: They were heroes during the glory days of the Malaysia Cup in the 1990s. But for four-year-old Charmaine Lim, they are more than just that.
Malaysia Cup legends including Rafi Ali, Fandi Ahmad, Abbas Saad, Malek Awab came together on Sunday to host a charity game to save the life of Charmaine, who is suffering from a deadly form of cancer.
The cause to save her life also moved the MediaCorp All-Stars to play against the former 'Dream Team' to raise money - through ticket sales - for Charmaine's medical fund.
The former Dream Team beat the MediaCorp All-Stars team 11-5 in the match.
Charmaine has been diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma, a debilitating cancer that occurs in children and has been given a 10% chance of survival by her doctors in Singapore.
But hope exists for the spirited little girl. A new trial drug called 3F8, available in the United States, has been known to dramatically increase survival rates by up to five times.
The trial drug is being administered at the Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York, considered the world's premiere centre for treating children with Neuroblastoma.
With this treatment, Charmaine could have a 50% chance to live. But it comes with a hefty S$500,000 price tag - not a small sum for Charmaine's mum who is a single mother with two children.
The footballer legends and the MediaCorp All Stars managed to raise S$30,000 in ticket sales and S$10,000 via donation boxes.
Former national footballer Rafi Ali, who came up with the idea of the charity football match, said: "Tell Charmaine she's not fighting the monster alone because we're all here fighting with her."
Others have stepped forward to help as well. The staff and management of ladies' spa Subtle Senses came forward as volunteers to collect donations at the charity event. The company also donated S$5,000.
Other organisations that have come forward to help include Coca-Cola and Bengawan Solo.

Pop icon Michael Jackson dead at 50
Posted: 26 June 2009 1142 hr
LOS ANGELES : Michael Jackson died after suffering a cardiac arrest, officials confirmed, sending shockwaves around the entertainment world as stunned stars and fans mourned the loss of the tortured music icon known as the "King of Pop."
Los Angeles County Coroner's office spokesman Lieutenant Fred Corral told CNN that Jackson, 50, was pronounced dead at 2:26 pm (2126 GMT) local time, roughly two hours after paramedics were first called to the star's home.
"I can tell you at this time that we were notified by West Los Angeles Police Department detectives that Mr Jackson was transported... to the hospital, and upon admitting, he was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at approximately 2:26 this afternoon," Corral told CNN.
Corral said an autopsy would "most likely" be carried out on Friday but would not speculate on the exact cause of death.
"Everything is still ongoing. We will be responding to the hospital to move Mr Jackson to our facility where he will be examined to determine the cause of death," Corral said.
"As far as I'm aware, we were notified by LAPD detectives that Mr Jackson was brought in by paramedics to the hospital in full cardiac arrest and then he was later pronounced dead.
National and local television networks showed hundreds of media and onlookers gathered at UCLA Medical Center, while CNN showed police motorcycle riders surrounding Jackson's rented mansion as crowds of tourists and fans gathered, snapping photographs of the property's wrought iron gates.
Lana Brown, a 49-year-old tourist from Dallas, broke down in tears as she digested the news.
"Right today I can't believe we might have lost the best entertainer this world has ever seen," she told AFP.
CNN reported that several of Jackson's siblings had gathered at the hospital.
Jackson's death came as the singer prepared to make a keenly anticipated concert comeback in London, his first series of shows in more than a decade and the first since his 2005 acquittal on child molestation charges.
However those concerts -- billed as the "final curtain" -- were thrown into doubt after Jackson pushed back the opening dates last month.
Organizers of the concerts at the time stressed the delay was not linked to Jackson's health. When asked about Jackson's physical condition, Randy Phillips of concert backers AEG Live said: "I would trade my body for his tomorrow. He's in fantastic shape."
While Jackson reigned as the "King of Pop" in the 1980s, his once-stellar career was overshadowed by his colorful public behavior, his startling physical transformation and multiple allegations of child abuse.
Jackson lived as a virtual recluse following his 2005 acquittal on charges including child molestation and plotting to kidnap his young accuser.
Despite his acquittal, the trial was a body blow from which the pop music superstar struggled to recover.
Four years later, Jackson was still worshipped by fans for revolutionizing music, dance and music videos at the peak of his success.
The attention however paid to him in recent years was less flattering, focusing on apparent cosmetic surgery -- which he denies -- his baby dangling antics and a decade of swirling child abuse allegations.
Born on August 29, 1958, Jackson made his show business debut with four of his older brothers in the Jackson Five pop group, and went on to lead the stage clan with a piping soprano and dazzling dance moves.
By 1969, the group had signed a contract with Motown Records, becoming one of the last great acts to emerge from the legendary label.
The Jacksons produced seven platinum singles for Motown, selling over a million, and three multi-platinum albums, selling more than two million. They moved to CBS's Epic Records in 1976.
Despite the early success, Jackson was to recall those years as unhappy and lonely ones. Eventually the family act broke up, as Jackson went solo.
In 1979, Quincy Jones produced Jackson's first solo album for Epic, "Off the Wall," a huge disco-oriented success that sold 10 million copies.
They teamed up again in 1982 for what would be Jackson's breakthrough album as a composer and co-producer, "Thriller," which became the top-selling album of all time, with sales exceeding 41 million.
Jones reacted with shock after being informed of Jackson's death Thursday.
"I'm absolutely devastated at this news," he said. "I just don't have the words. Divinity brought our souls together and allowed us to do what we could do through the '80s," Jones said.
"To this day that music is played in every corner of the world, and the reason is because he had it all -- talent, grace, and professionalism. I've lost my little brother today and part of my soul has gone with him."

More singles leaving it to chance to find their other half
By Melanie Yip, 938 LIVE | Posted: 23 June 2009 2135 hrs
SINGAPORE: More singles in Singapore are leaving it to fate to help find their other half, according to a recent survey conducted by local dating agency Lunch Actually.
While singles in Singapore cited more traditional methods of relying on peers or having family and relatives keep a lookout for that special someone, more have decided not to rush into things, and leaving it to chance.
In a survey conducted by the agency in 2005, only eight per cent said they left it to fate to decide who they will meet. This group has grown since.
Now, 14 per cent of singles surveyed said they do not mind leaving it to fate to find that someone who shares the same values and interests.
Lunch Actually's co-founder, Violet Lim, attributes this mindset change to media influence.
She said: "(This is due to) the movies that we watch, the books that we read. So we feel that it is only right that we meet someone by chance, as opposed to taking a more proactive approach to meeting someone.
"And because so many people are hoping to meet someone by chance, the probability of that happening is very low. So as a result, why many are still single is because they have not met anyone that they want to be involved with."
The same survey also found that single men and women in Singapore have different dating expectations. For example, almost 60 per cent of women say they are open to dating younger men. Half of the male respondents say they are not against dating older women.
In terms of assessing their partners on educational qualification, about 40 per cent of female respondents say they will not date men with lower educational levels, while more than 70 per cent of men say they are fine dating women with higher qualifications.
Men are also more receptive to dating women who earn more than them.
Three-quarters of the women polled say they will not date men who are shorter than them.

Haze may return to Singapore
By Desmond Wong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 19 June 2009 1711 hrs
SINGAPORE: Drier conditions as a result of possible El Nino effects later this year could see the haze returning to Singapore.
The best way for Singapore to mitigate this danger is to work with its partners in Indonesia, said Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim.
He said: "This year, for example, we're a bit worried, because there are indications...you could see El Nino coming back. El Nino conditions are drier than usual, and that is a cause for concern for us because the haze situation could worsen."
Singapore has been working with Indonesia's Jambi province to reduce slash-and-burn activities by farmers there.
The minister also said that the sharing of information and co-operation across governments is critical to avoid disrupting events like the Formula One (F1) race as the dry season heats up.
Dr Yaacob said: "The dry season is starting now - July, August, September. If you look back at 1997 and 2006...September, October...was really the peak. I do not know if that will happen, but if it does, it will affect our (hosting of) F1. So there are many things we should be concerned about and we have informed the Indonesians that they have to do something about it."
The minister was speaking at the opening of the Sea to Space building, home of the Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing or CRISP.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) is on its guard against the increase of forest fires in Indonesia, and CRISP will be lending the abilities of its new GeoEye ground station to help NEA monitor hot spots.
