Merry Christmas - Part II (The presents!)

Hello all, Happy Boxing Day!

In Singapore, Boxing day is not an official Public Holiday. However i still wish people Happy Boxing day! =P

Information from HERE:
It explains that.. In Britain, Boxing Day is usually celebrated on the following day after Christmas Day, which is 26 December. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas (see definition in the Oxford English Dictionary)

So why is it called Boxing Day?
Traditionally, 26 December was the day to open the Christmas Box to share the contents with the poor.

Anyway, now i want to share with you the Christmas presents i received from my friends and colleagues!

This is before some unwrapping of them..

After unwrapping!
There were chocolates, Christmas cards, sweets, a watch, a keychain.. HAHA~!

And before i forget, a packet of Famous Amos biscuits... yum!

So what did you get for Christmas? =)

Winter solstice (冬至 dong zhi)

Today is Winter solstice (冬至 dong zhi).

From Wiki, The Winter Solstice Festival or The Extreme of Winter (Chinese and Japanese: 冬至; Korean: 동지; Vietnamese: Đông chí) (Pinyin: Dōng zhì), (Rōmaji: Tōji), (Romaja:Dongji) is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and other East Asians during the dongzhi solar term on or around December 21 when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest; i.e., on the first day of the dongzhi solar term.

We celebrate by eating and making of Tangyuan (湯圓, as pronounced in Cantonese; Mandarin Pinyin: Tāng Yuán) or balls of glutinous rice, which symbolize reunion.

So i had mine too! =)

Mum and Grandma said, after eating this, we go one year older..
Oh no!!!! *Screams*

So have you eaten Tang Yuan? =)

The most irritating word in Reuters poll

Everyday, we use so much words, talk so much..which is the most annoying and irritating word to you?

According to Reuters poll (Article from Yahoo) it is the word : "Whatever"

Quoted from the article:

For the second consecutive year "whatever' topped a Marist poll as the most annoying word or phrase in the English language.
Nearly 39 percent of 1,020 Americans questioned in the survey deemed it the most irritating word, followed by "like" with 28 percent and the phrase "you know what I mean' at 15 percent.

Personally, i also find this word irritating!

Why?

Let me quote examples.

Example 1
Boyfriend: Hey honey, what would you like to have for dinner?
Girlfriend: Whatever.
Boyfriend: Oh, ok.. how about chinese food?
Girlfriend: Whatever..

Example 2
Girl 1: Hey, shall we go for a movie?
Girl 2: Whatever.
Girl 1: Cartoon, Action, Comedy?
Girl 2: Whatever..

See how annoying if you give such answers?
It does not actually answer the questions, and also gave a very general answer. =)

Both "Whatever" and "Anything" are the words on my poll of most irritating words.

Funny thing, its got a drink named after them in Singapore. LoL

So what is the most irritating word to you ?

Campaign against child violence

Today on Yahoo Singapore, i saw this article on a Facebook campaign, whereby people are changing their profile picture, as a global viral campaign to eliminate violence against children.

On their Facebook account, they are asking people to change their facebook profile picture to a cartoon from their childhood..

To join in this campaign, i decided to change my profile picture to my personal childhood cartoon too!

I am going to put it for 2 weeks.

First week, it shall be : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles !

This four green heros (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello & Raphael) will always be my childhood heros!

Turtles in a half shell, Turtle power!

Second week shall be Transformers!

This is also what i been going after during my childhood days.. I can still remember having an Optimus Prime toy..! (But not sure where it gone to...)

In the words of Optimus Prime : "Autobots, Transform and Roll Out!!!"

So what was your childhood cartoon?
Do join in the campaign. =)

Hello all! Its been so long since i had an entry here.. so where have i been?

Times flies, im already in the 3rd week of my new work, and everyday, i learnt things (bit by bit..) and also get to know each colleague (bit by bit...), which is better, which is evil.. oops!

I also had to leave the house, and board the public bus, and during peak hour, the whole bus would be so packed!
There was once, my fat backside accidentally bumped onto a lady's and she turned around to stare at me!! OOPS!!

Not my fault ok.. =P

This is what i been doing lately, squeeze in public bus, work, and when back home, squeeze on bus again. =)

Soon, we will bid Year 2010 goodbye!
Have you started your plans for Year 2011?

The last day at work - 4 Nov 2010

After about 6 years in the company, yesterday was the last day of work for me.

I really miss the lovely and great colleagues that i've met over the years.
They supported me, guided me along, and are great friends too!

We worked hard together.
We had lunch together..
We played hard together...
We had misunderstandings with each other....

I really thank all of you who i known and those who know me.

Wishing you all good luck, take care, all of you! =)

There are just too many people i want to thank!

Shall dedicate this song to all of my dear colleagues!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Next week, i will be moving on to a new working environment, with new people, and of course new challenges!

Wish me many good luck, my dear friends! (=

Charger Exploded !

I woke up with my iphone switched off, by itself. (no battery).

Walks to the charger, switch it on.
*BANG*
Sparks and the whole house electricity got cut off !!

I panicked.

Check the ''electricity box'' inside my house, for any 'unusual' trips of the buttons..
Conclusion: No.

Ran out to check other neighbours..
Conclusion: No problem for them.

Tried to open the meter box, outside the unit...

Conclusion: Locked.

Ran to Lift area, to take down the HDB Flats Maintenance team number..
Conclusion: Called, and wait.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

20 minutes later, the man arrived and showed me the secret!

The top part of the meter box, can actually be open!! (Stupid me..)

Come, i show you how!

See huh.. the top area, can actually be flipped open..
With two little compartments..

And they can be flipped open too!!
*do check this two compartments too*

With this incident, i learnt something new.
And luckily, no fire was involved. =)

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

See what happened to the charger??

Noticed the black colour area?

Lesson learnt: Cannot go for cheapo things, next time!!~

Still using disposable chopsticks?

Disposable chopsticks.
Convenient, use it and throw.

Have you ever wonder how they are being produced?

I heard of news, seen pictures, but i guess watching the video is still the scariest.

From the video, it seems like they are being socked with chemicals, after chemicals.. to make them last longer, and appear whiter.

Eeks!

Bring your own chopsticks or fork and spoon.

Save the environment too! =)

没那麽简单..

A song that keep repeating in my mind recently..

The song title: 没那麽简单 [Translated into English: Not so Easy]
It is actually like a love song, that talks about, it's not so easy to find the other half you are looking for. =)

Enjoy!

I saw a bear in Singapore!

Last week, a video of a 'bear' in Ulu Pandan appeared.

A bear in Singapore and at a bus stop, trying to find food from a dustbin.
"Wow.. how exciting Singapore got.." i thought to myself..

However, after the big 'Hoo-Ha' of the police, as well as tens of men and women from Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) and Wildlife Reserves Singapore who scoured the area for hours..
It turned out to be a marketing campaign!

Imagine the manpower and resources wasted, due to a about 10 seconds video clip of the bear..

You can read more HERE.

Our Mr Brown, also did a funny video of it, and i must share with you all!
Haha! =)

Run Bear Bear, Bear Bear, Run Run..

Anyway, where they got the costume, who was wearing it huh?

Mizuno Wave Run - 10.10.10

What a special date for today!
If you din realize, today is 10 Oct 2010, and in numerical, it is: 10.10.10 ! =)

And today is also the Mizuno Wave Run, a 10km run.
Today's run had a mixture of those sandy areas, and pavement areas. Personally, i was walking a little too much today, and i guess my timing would be very bad for this run. (oops!!)

After about 3km distance mark, my right knee area started to feel pain, and i had to walk, plus jog a little.. but still i finished the whole run, which is what i am aiming.

*pat pat ownself* =)

A picture to show you today's crowd..

My tag number and the singlet given..

Another Finisher Medal for collection. =)

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My Singapore friends, did you happened to read the Today's newspaper last Friday, and so happened to see a PSB Academy graduands list?

Anyway, did you see a famailar name..? (Hint.. Hint..)
Come, i help you........

It's my name!!! Haha...
So proud of myself. =P

And now, its for a new chapter of my life.
A new direction, and hopefully everything flows smoothly..

Cousin Wedding - 2 Oct 2010

Attended my cousin, Li Yun's wedding dinner with mum last night.

We were born about the same time.. and mum often brings me over to her place. In my memory, I can still remember the days when we were still in our cloth diapers, playing with each other, snatching each other toys.. the loser cries(of course!) Haha!!

And in the blink of an eye, twenty years down the road, last night i see her getting married!

The stage..

The table settings..

The lovely couple.. <3

The traditional 'Yum Seng' from all of us..

It was also a type of family gathering for the older generation (mum and uncles).
Therefore i was not spared the toasting with the relatives (luckily i got some trainings), so did not get drunk. Wee Wee.. LoL

However, how good i hide, or cover my face with the table cloth, i was still being bombarded with the "when is your turn?" by many of them..

-___-||

But anyway, i am very happy to see her finding her man, and getting married!
It was a great gathering! =)

My first time..

Everyone have a first time...

Why this picture?

This is the picture i took, in my sunglasses (and with my contact lens!) Haha...
My first time wearing contact lens, after so many years, when all my friends around have actually been doing it for so long...

What kept me so long from wearing contact lens?

FEAR.

Fear of the contact lens, missing..
Fear of the contact lens, dropping out when im outside...
Fear of seeing my finger near my own eyes!

My friends help me to overcome it.
The whole lot of them, with a mirror, and my trial contact lens, guided and watched me put on the contact lens for the first time. LoL

It's actually not that scary!!!

When you are more 'skillful' with it, its quite fast, actually.

For those first timers, i got links for you to read, and this helps me too.
See --> HERE
Some videos --> HERE

Cheers~! =)

The Mid-Autumn Festival, 中秋节

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! =)

Source
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Zhongqiu Festival (traditional Chinese: 中秋節; simplified Chinese: 中秋节; falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar.

With source from Wiki, it is also a night when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. So did you managed to see the moon tonight? =)

Wiki also listed some additional cultural or regional customs things we should do during this day....
  • Carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns
  • Burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang'e (Chinese: 嫦娥; pinyin: Cháng'é)
  • Planting Mid-Autumn trees
  • Collecting dandelion leaves and distributing them evenly among family members
  • Fire Dragon Dances
  • Putting pomelo rinds on one's head
  • In Taiwan, since the 1980s, barbecuing meat outdoors has become a widespread way to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Hmmm.. looking at this list, those that i done before are: carrying of lanterns, eating of mooncakes, and hoping to see 嫦娥.. Hehe!! =P

Last year, i was with my friend, Tian Fa and his friends, carrying lanterns at Ang Mo Kio park, and eating mooncakes. Few years back, we still meet up to play candles, chit chat...
I guess everyone's busy this time around.. and my dinner appointment was being cancelled last minute too.. so its a stay home mooncake festival for me. =)

So how's your mooncake festival? did you see the moon??
What ever it is, this song is for all of my dear friends! =)

Heard the new SMRT jingle?

Hello all, have you heard the new SMRT "train is coming" jingle lately?
In case you dont know what i talking about, you can watch the below video..

I took the MRT last night, and it was my first time hearing it.
"Very cute!" i find it...
However, this thought slowly faded away.. why? You must be asking me..

I first heard it at the Bukit Batok station which is nearest to my house, (also the time where i find it cute.) and then i travel to Jurong East station, i heard it the second time.
As i need to travel to Orchard area, i had to change to another line at Raffles City station, i heard it the third time.

Hearing it 3 times in a trip, does not make the song that cute anymore.. =(

Then i start to think....

If there is a chinese version, will it be like...
火车来了〜
火车来了〜
火车来了〜
请开始排队...
爱你的旅程。

And if there's a hokkien version...
her cia lai liao ~~~
her cia lai liao ~~~
her cia lai liao ~~~
kin bai dui..

HAHA!!
Maybe its me, but as i keep hearing the same jingle, it kinda irritate me...
How about you? =)

Life Is Fragile . . .

I came across this article on the newspaper, few days ago..

Ex-lawyer dies in Perth crash
Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_576167.html

She was just weeks shy of qualifying as vet when car accident happened.

Ms Celina Chua was a mere five weeks from completing her second degree in veterinary medicine at Murdoch University when she was killed in the car crash. Her mother and two sisters were also injured in the accident. -- PHOTO: FACEBOOK
A SINGAPOREAN lawyer who gave up her career to pursue a veterinary degree in Australia was killed in a car crash in Perth last Friday, just short of her graduation.
Ms Celina Chua, 30, would have been able to fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming a vet in just five weeks, after completing her second degree in veterinary medicine at Murdoch University.
But her life was cut short when the car she was driving careened off a three-lane highway and crashed headlong into an oncoming vehicle.
Western Australian police said she was behind the wheel when she lost control of her Hyundai Excel. She was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Her mother and a younger sister were also injured in the accident and were admitted to the Royal Perth Hospital. Another younger sister, who was also in the car, sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the other car suffered punctured lungs, multiple fractures and cuts, and was also taken to hospital. Police are still investigating the accident.
Media reports on the accident said Ms Chua's family members were in Perth for a short visit when it happened.
* * * * * * * *

I'm very sad to read this article, as it brought back memories of my good friend, and his girlfriend, who also left this world in a car accident, in year 2008. (Link to 2008 article)

He was only 25.

I can still recall me calling his mobile, 2 weeks before this happened, to ask him out for coffee session. "I will call you back?" His answer to me.

The call never came.

It took me some time to overcome this period of losing him.
Two years passed, so fast..

* * * *  * * *
Look at how fragile life is?

For the many friends who are facing problems, crisis, and challenges, this is for you!

Say Hello to...

Say Hello to who?
You might be wondering.....

Here's the story..

I met Miss Fujitsu, during my diploma course period. She was being dumped by the previous ''boyfriend'' (and was being sold to me at an low price, after like 2 years usage, due to the owner buying a latest model.)

With the most basic usage of doing projects, and able to surf the internet, it was good enough for me.

However, recently Miss Fujitsu, had been naughty and not been working well with me lately.. with mood swings (regular hanging of screen), anyway its an at least 6 years ago model (I only got 60GB disk drive. =x)

Therefore, with the Comex show at Suntec City, (and to make myself happier..) i dumped her, teaches my mum how to operate and play some simple games with it. Yeah~

Now i am dating with Miss Lenovo! =)

Say Hello to Miss Lenovo! =)

The Battle of month end closing.

This is the 2nd month-end closing of the accounts.
As usual, its a war in the office.. Lucky thing, i got my sword on the right hand and my shield on the left, all ready for battle !

A few nights, we had to work till after 9pm, or even 10pm, each day was fully packed with never-ending things, from 8:30am till 9pm. While we are doing task A, task B, C, D, E, F, comes rushing us. And in between all these tasks, we are needed to learn new things.
The whole team is Physically and Mentally stressed out.

As such pressure build up, people tend to be more short-tempered, (i admit i am one of them too) and quarrels start from such situations too.

Many times, i really feel like giving up, and tender my registration (Yup) but i overcame it. However i am not sure how long this can last, as i always drag myself to work nowadays..

So as a reminder to myself and all my friends, do keep cool.
Work is never ending, work to your very best and dont give yourself too much pressure!

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place... and I don´t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently, if you let it.

You, me or nobody, is gonna hit as hard as life. But ain't about how hard you hit... It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward... how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That´s how winning is done.

Now, if you know what you worth, go out and get what you worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits. And not pointing fingers saying: You ain´t what you wanna be because of him or her or anybody.
Cowards do that and that ain´t you! You´re better than that!" (Rocky Balboa)

Try playing this in your head, always.

Complains of work aside, let's see what Hong Wei been doing this weekend ? =)

Few days back, Hong Wei was being invited to take part in an event called: Tiger Beer Regional Online Influencer Challenge !

The Ghost Festival a.k.a. the Hungry Ghost Festival

Today, is the first day of the seventh Lunar month, or the so called Ghost month.

During this month, you will be seeing people praying and placing offerings along the pavements.

Laugh at me for being superstitious, there are some advices(or things you might already know.) in which i would like to share.

Like how my mum and grandma always say, "Hong Wei, ah.. dont step onto the joss sticks, offerings or incense paper hor.. it's for the good brothers one.."

When i got older, i realized that the 'good brothers' mum and grandma referred to was actually the spirits/ghost, who will be given a month ''holiday'' on human world during this month. Therefore, the offerings are for them.

*So do not step onto the offerings, when you see them.*

During this month, we are advised not to stay out too late during the night.. if you really staying out late, for ladies, try to get a friend or buddy to walk home with you.

It is also a month of  'concert-like' live performances, called 'Koh-tai' by the Hokkien-speaking people. It is usually performed by a group of singers, dancers and entertainers on a temporary stage that setup within the residential district of certain areas in Singapore.

*Do note, the very first row of seats are meant for the 'good brothers'*

Some video clips of  'Koh-tai'..

So for this month, be safe, don't stay out too late. =)

Friday, August 6, 2010

What Hong Wei is up to lately?

*waves* Hello to all! How's everyone doing? =)

Hong Wei have been busy as a bee, after the training trip from Penang.

Since i am now in a new company (the previous company got bought over by current), the work place transformed into a new environment, working style was different, way of reporting was different. We learnt new things, almost everyday.

The expected situation : someone will eventually lose his/her cool, and quarrels will occur. (agree?)

Personally, i felt everyone became tensed up, as work start to pile up each day. With this kind of enironment, i am not feeling that good too, as i posted status like "I feel sick, but not fallen sick. Something is very wrong.." on my Facebook.

Many times, i really wanted to give up and tender my resignation(seriously), but after some ranting, the idea disappeared. I guess i may be ranting and scolding my desktop screen, i still don't bear to leave my lovely colleagues. HAHA!

Why?

Because one of my colleague, she bought me this lanyard !
My favourite Domo! =D

After 5+years, I do admit, i am not that happy working, already. Seems to be dragging myself to work each day.
Sometimes, i feel like taking a short break, then start looking for another new job, but what about the commitments i need to fulfill ?

As the Chinese saying goes : 手停口停, which means when your hands stop moving(out of job), your mouth stops, as you are not able to earn to buy food.

What would you do, if you were me?

Are our MRTs too crowded ?

Back home from business!
Was a tiring trip and was so busy, got no time to shop. =(

Came across some interesting articles on our MRT today..

Quoted from a article from Yahoo

It wrote that last month, The Sunday Times reported that SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa dismissed complaints of overcrowded trains by claiming that “people can board the trains — it is whether they choose to.”

Those who took the public transport can also know how crowded it is during the peak hours, and weekends..
My personal thoughts that came across my mind when i read this sentence :
"Can i choose not to take the MRT?"

I cant afford to miss the train, and be late for work or school, leh..

For now, i try hard not to go to town area, during weekends, and after work.
Know why ?

I will become one of them in this picture. [Taken from here]

No joke, my friends.. =(

Its getting serious, and too crowded, and Dear PM Lee said we need 100,000 more people..

Soon, we might end up like Japan.

*cover eyes*

One killed, 8 injured in accident along Chai Chee Street

I saw this news on TV, last night.

Article from Channel News Asia.

SINGAPORE : An accident between a double-decker bus Service Number 87 and a large tree-pruning vehicle left a 50-year-old male passenger dead and several others injured on Friday.

The collision occurred along Chai Chee Street in Bedok.

Police have arrested a 33-year-old Bangladeshi worker from the landscape management company for causing death by negligence.

Shattered glass windows, a fallen tree, and major traffic congestion were the results of the accident which left one dead and eight passengers - including a pregnant woman - injured.

The bus was behind the lorry when it went to the middle lane. But little did the bus driver know that the head of the crane was protruding into the middle lane, and this scraped against the side of the bus.

The loud sound from the collision attracted hundreds of residents from nearby blocks.

One resident said: "Like glass shattering. It sounded massive and sharp."

A second commented: "I saw them moving the victims down from the upper deck. It looked quite serious."

Three bus passengers were taken to hospitals, while others refused treatment, citing minor injuries.

Both the bus driver and crane operator were not injured in the accident.

They remained calm and silent while clean-up work was going on. - CNA/ms

It seems the 50-year-old male passenger was sitting at the upper deck, and the whole row of the upper deck windows, all shattered, leaving him dead.

My condolences to the man and his family.

Personally, i always like sitting on the upper deck, its like you are so much higher up in height and closer to the sky. =]
